John 14:1–6

The disciples were about to experience one of the most confusing and painful nights of their lives. Jesus had told them He was leaving. He had warned them that betrayal was coming. He had just told Peter that Peter would deny Him. They didn’t fully understand what was happening, but they knew something was changing.

And into all that uncertainty, Jesus said: “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.”

Jesus didn’t tell them there was nothing difficult ahead. There absolutely was. Within hours He would be arrested. Their plans would seem destroyed. Their Teacher would be crucified. Everything they thought they understood was about to be shaken. Jesus wasn’t promising them a life without trouble. He was telling them where to place their trust when trouble came.

Then Jesus reminded them that this moment wasn’t the end of the story. He told them He was preparing a place for them and that He would come again. When Thomas admitted that they didn’t know the way, Jesus gave one of the greatest statements in all of John: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

Sometimes we desperately want Jesus to hand us a map. Tell me what’s going to happen. Show me how this works out. Tell me what the next six months look like. But Jesus didn’t give the disciples a map.

He gave them Himself.

Maybe that’s what we need today too. We don’t have to know every turn ahead when we know the One we’re following. When your heart is troubled and the road doesn’t make sense, hold tightly to Jesus. He isn’t merely showing you the way. He is the Way.

Today’s thought: Where am I asking Jesus for answers when He’s asking me to trust Him?
