There are plenty of titles we could use for Jesus. Savior. Lord. King. Messiah. Son of God. Creator. All of them are true. But sitting with His disciples during His final hours before the cross, Jesus gave them another one that feels almost unbelievable: Friend.
Jesus gives His disciples another picture they would have easily understood: “I am the vine, you are the branches.” A branch doesn’t struggle to manufacture grapes. It doesn’t wake up every morning determined to try harder to produce fruit.
Jesus knew what was coming. Within hours there would be betrayal, soldiers, an arrest, a trial and the cross. The disciples were about to watch everything around them seemingly fall apart.
The disciples had spent years with Jesus physically beside them. When they were confused, they could ask Him a question. When they were afraid, He was there. When they didn’t know where to go, they could literally follow His footsteps.
