A Different Kind of Peace

John 14:27
Jesus knew what was coming. Within hours there would be betrayal, soldiers, an arrest, a trial and the cross. The disciples were about to watch everything around them seemingly fall apart. And right in the middle of preparing them for all of that, Jesus said, “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you.”
That’s important because Jesus wasn’t promising them peaceful circumstances. Their circumstances were about to become anything but peaceful. He was promising them His peace in the middle of those circumstances. Then He added, “Not as the world gives do I give to you.”
The world’s version of peace usually depends on everything going right. The bills are paid. Everyone is healthy. The relationship is good. The plan is working. The future makes sense. Then we can relax. But the peace Jesus offers doesn’t require everything around us to be settled because its source isn’t our circumstances. Its source is Him.
Maybe you’re waiting for something in your life to change before you believe you can have peace. Jesus offers something better. You can have peace while you’re waiting. Peace while you’re uncertain. Peace while you’re hurting. Peace when you don’t know what comes next. The storm around you can still be real while the presence of Jesus becomes even more real within you.
Today’s thought: Am I waiting for my circumstances to give me peace when Jesus has already offered me His?
