John 2:12–25

These disciples have barely started following Jesus, and they’re already learning something: following Jesus means you’re going to move.

After Cana, Jesus goes down to Capernaum with His mother, brothers and disciples. Then John tells us that Passover was approaching, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Depending on the route, that journey from the Galilee region to Jerusalem could mean roughly another 80–100 miles on foot. These guys haven’t been disciples very long, and they’ve already put some serious miles on their sandals!

But this trip is different. Cana was quiet. Jerusalem wouldn’t be.

Jesus enters the temple and finds people selling animals and exchanging money. He makes a whip of cords, drives them out and declares, “Stop making My Father’s house a place of business!” The disciples are beginning to discover that the gentle Jesus they followed to a wedding is also fiercely committed to His Father’s holiness.

Then Jesus says something they don’t fully understand: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Everyone thinks He’s talking about the building. John tells us Jesus was talking about His body. And here’s the part I love: John says that after Jesus was raised from the dead, the disciples remembered what He had said.

They were collecting pieces they wouldn’t understand until later.

That’s discipleship. Walk with Him. Listen to Him. Remember His words. Trust Him when you understand—and keep walking when you don’t. The disciples had no idea where all these miles were taking them yet.

They just knew Who they were walking with.

Today’s thought: Am I willing to keep following Jesus even when I don’t understand where He’s taking me?
