He Went Through Samaria

John 4:1–26
John writes one little sentence that can be easy to read past:
“And He had to pass through Samaria.”
There were other ways to travel. And because of the deep hostility between Jews and Samaritans, some Jewish travelers chose routes that avoided Samaria altogether. But Jesus went straight through it.
And sitting beside a well was a woman who needed Him.
She was a Samaritan. She was a woman. Her relationship history was complicated. And when Jesus asked her for a drink, even she was surprised He was speaking to her: “How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?”
Jesus crossed barriers other people had built because there was someone on the other side who needed hope.
He knew her story too. He knew about the five husbands. He knew the man she was currently with wasn’t her husband. Jesus knew everything she probably wished nobody knew—and He sat down beside her anyway.
That’s Jesus.
Maybe you’ve convinced yourself there are parts of your story that make you someone Jesus would rather avoid. But the woman at the well shows us the opposite. Jesus doesn’t run from broken people. He goes looking for them.
Samaria wasn’t somewhere Jesus accidentally ended up.
There was someone there worth going after.
Today’s thought: Is there a part of my story I’ve been trying to hide from the very One who came looking for me?
