You Don’t Have to Have It All Together
His mercies are new every morning — especially the mornings you feel like you’ve already failed.
Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Here’s something worth sitting with: the book these verses come from is called Lamentations. It’s not a highlight reel. It’s a book of grief — written by someone watching everything he loved fall apart.
And right there in the middle of the rubble, he writes this: His mercies are new every morning.
Not “new once you’ve cleaned yourself up.” Not “new after you’ve strung together a good week.” New every morning. Which means tomorrow, before you’ve done a single thing right, there is already a fresh supply of mercy with your name on it.
Most of us carry a quiet belief that we have to arrive put-together — that God is waiting for the version of us that finally has it figured out. So we wait. We’ll pray more seriously once things settle down. We’ll get back to church once we’re less of a mess. We’ll come back to God once we’re worth coming back with.
But that morning never comes, because that’s not how mercy works. Mercy isn’t the reward for having it together. It’s the thing that meets you precisely because you don’t.
You don’t have to have it all together. You never did. The faithfulness in that verse — “great is Your faithfulness” — isn’t about how faithful you’ve been. It’s about Him. His compassions never fail, even on the mornings yours do.
So whatever yesterday held — the prayer you didn’t pray, the person you snapped at, the thing you can’t believe you did again — it doesn’t get the last word. The morning does. The mercy does. He does.
Start there today. Not with your résumé. Just with the mercy that’s already waiting.
