John 1:43–51
Nathanael wasn’t easily impressed. When Philip excitedly told him they had found the One Moses and the prophets wrote about—Jesus of Nazareth—Nathanael basically responded, “Nazareth? Seriously? Can anything good come from there?” Philip didn’t argue with him. He simply said, “Come and see.”
Then Nathanael met Jesus.
Before Nathanael could explain anything about himself, Jesus described his character. Nathanael was stunned and asked, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Whatever had happened beneath that tree was enough for Nathanael to realize he wasn’t standing in front of an ordinary man. He immediately declared, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”
But I love Jesus’ response. In today’s language, it almost sounds like: “Nathanael, you think THAT was something? You ain’t seen nothing yet.” Jesus told him he would see greater things than these.
Maybe that’s something we need to remember too. We can become amazed by what God has already done and forget that He isn’t finished. The Jesus who saw Nathanael beneath the fig tree sees you too. He sees the prayers nobody else knows about, the questions you haven’t said aloud, the battles nobody notices and the places where you’re still trying to trust Him.
Keep following Him. You ain’t seen nothing yet.
Today’s thought: Where have I allowed what I’ve already seen God do to become the limit of what I believe He can still do?
