Maybe There’s More to the Story

John 9:1–7
Jesus and His disciples walked past a man who had been blind since birth, and the disciples immediately wanted an explanation. They asked, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” In other words, they wanted to know whose fault it was. Isn’t that still one of our first questions when something painful happens? Why did this happen? What did I do wrong? Why would God allow this?
But Jesus changed the question. He told them this wasn’t about assigning blame. Instead, He said that the works of God were going to be displayed through this man’s life. The disciples saw a problem that needed an explanation, but Jesus saw a person whose story wasn’t finished.
Jesus made mud, put it on the man’s eyes and told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam. The man went, washed, and came back seeing. Think about what that must have been like. A man who had never seen a sunrise, the face of someone he loved, or even his own reflection suddenly opened his eyes to a world he had only imagined. What had been part of his story from birth was suddenly transformed into a testimony of what Jesus could do.
Maybe there’s something happening in your life right now that you can’t explain. Be careful about putting a period where God may still be writing the sentence. You may only be seeing the painful chapter while Jesus sees the whole story. Sometimes our greatest testimony begins in the very place where we once asked, “God, why is this happening?”
Today’s thought: What if the part of my story I understand the least becomes a place where people eventually see Jesus the most?
