Make Much of Jesus

John 1:19–34
John the Baptist had every opportunity to make the moment about himself. People were coming from everywhere to hear him preach. Crowds were gathering. Religious leaders were asking who he was. He had influence, attention, and a following that was growing fast. But when they asked John to explain himself, his answer was essentially, “Don’t look at me. Look at Him.” John knew exactly who he was because he knew exactly who Jesus was. He said he wasn’t the Christ. He wasn’t Elijah. He wasn’t the Prophet they were waiting for. He was simply “a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” Then, when Jesus appeared, John gave Him one of the greatest introductions ever spoken: “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” There is something powerful about a life that refuses to compete with Jesus for attention. John didn’t need recognition because his purpose wasn’t to build his own name. His purpose was to point people toward Jesus. Later John would summarize his entire life with a simple statement: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30) What if we lived that way? What if our conversations, families, friendships, work, social media, successes—even our struggles—became opportunities to point someone toward Christ? You don’t have to be a preacher to prepare the way for Jesus. Sometimes you simply have to live in such a way that when people look at you, they eventually look past you and see Him.Today’s thought: How can I make much of Jesus today instead of making much of myself?
